Car sound inspection · bay 02

Put the sound on the board.

Record a suspicious car noise. CarWhisper separates what it hears from what might cause it, then gives you a safer next step.

A result in three modules

Enough detail to act. Enough restraint to trust.

01 / HEARD

Rhythmic metallic tick

Clear at idle. The frequency rises with engine speed.

02 / COULD FIT

Three possibilities

Oil pressure, injector noise, or a small exhaust leak.

03 / CHECK

Start safely

Check the oil level and warning lights before driving again.

Choose a listening zone

Different places leave different clues.

Pick the area that best matches what you hear. Each mode includes capture guidance and a sound-quality check.

Cartoon CarWhisper helper listening near the engine bay

Engine bay

20–30 sec
Example heard
Rhythmic tick at idle
Could fit
Oil level or pressure, injector or valve-train noise, small exhaust leak
First safe step
Check oil and warning lights before the next drive.
Cartoon CarWhisper helper listening near the brakes & wheel

Brakes & wheel

20–30 sec
Example heard
High squeal during light braking
Could fit
Pad wear indicator, surface rust, trapped debris, brake hardware
First safe step
If it becomes grinding or braking changes, stop and arrange inspection.
Cartoon CarWhisper helper listening near the exhaust

Exhaust

20–30 sec
Example heard
Uneven putter from the tailpipe
Could fit
Loose heat shield, exhaust leak, rough idle or misfire pattern
First safe step
Record outdoors from the side and stay clear of fumes and hot parts.

Sounds we can help describe

Start with the symptom, not a guessed part.

01Ticking or tapping at idle
02Squealing or scraping while braking
03Humming that changes with road speed
04Clunking over bumps or while turning
05Rattling underneath the vehicle
06Uneven exhaust note or leak-like hiss

Questions drivers ask first

Before you know the part, describe the sound.

Why is my car making a ticking noise?+

A tick can come from normal injector operation, low oil, valve-train components, or a small exhaust leak. CarWhisper compares the rhythm with when and where it happens, then suggests safe checks rather than claiming an exact fault.

Can I record a car noise with my phone?+

Yes. A steady 20–30 second recording can preserve useful acoustic clues. The app guides phone placement and asks for context such as idle, braking, turning, or road speed.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?+

Do not rely on an app to clear a safety-critical sound. If braking feels different or you hear severe grinding, stop safely and contact roadside help or a qualified mechanic.

What does an exhaust leak sound like?+

It may sound like ticking near the engine, hissing, tapping, or a louder uneven exhaust note. Record only outdoors, from the side, and away from hot components.

Your phone hears it.
